THE UP NATIONAL WRITERS WORKSHOP

Likhaan: UP Creative Writing Center (UP CWC is now accepting applications for fellowships to the UP National Writers Workshops in Davao (18-27 October 1999) and Baguio (29 March - 11April 2000). A total of 35 fellowships will be granted by the UP CWC: 15 for Davao and 20 for Baguio. 

Both workshops are open to writers in English and Filipino and several regional languages: Sugbuanon, Waray and Hiligaynon (Davao); Iluko and Bikol (Baguio). 

The workshops are open to writers from all the country's regeions. However, the Davao workshop has 10 slots reserved for Visayas and Mindanao-based applicants and the Baguio workshop has 2 slots each reserved for writers in Ilulko and Bicol. 

This year's theme is SANGANDANTAON: Tradisyon at Transisyon, to mark the beginning of the new millenium. In keeping with the theme, the workshops will be directed by the youngest Associates of the UP CWC. Vim Nadera will be director for the Davao workshop while J. Neil C. Garcia will direct the Baguio workshop. 

Applicants are enjoined to submit their manuscripts consisting of 6 poems or 2 short stories or 2 one-cact plays. Experimental literary forms are also acceptable. Fellowships are awarded by genre and by language. Applicants should submit under a pseudonym four hard copies (computer- encoded, double spaced) and a diskette copy (MS Word), accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the author's real name and pseudonym; an application letter indicating the choice of venue; a 2x2 ID photo; a short bio-data; an attestation that the works are original and not adapted or translated; a mailing address and telephone number. Entries in Iluko, Bikol, or any Visayan language should be accompanied by English or Filipino translations. Fellows of previous UP workshops are not eligible.  

The fellowship grants will cover board and lodging, and provide a modest stipend.

Deadline is on 15 August 1999. Applicants will be notified by the first week of September.
