"KWENTUHAN" OPENS WITH 2 FIL-AM WRITERS

The Writers Kwentuhan series is a project of the UP CWC which aims to provide a venue for the UP audience to interact with prominent writers who are not based in the university. The Kwentuhan is held four times a year, twice in each semester.

The UP Creative Writing Center (CWC) featured top Filipino American writers M. Evelina Galang and Rinehart Zamora Linmark in its first Writers Kwentuhan of the schoolyear last Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Arcellana Library of the UP College of Arts and Letters, The talks were attended by established Filipino writers and students under the UP MA Creative Writing Program.

The guests during the first Kwentuhan were both visiting Filipino American writers. Galang, who grew up in Illinois and Wisconsin is the author of Her Wild American Self, an award winning collection of short stories about contemporary Filipino American women. Published by the Coffee House Press in Minneapolis, the book received the Wisconsin Library Association's Outstanding Achievement Recognition Award in 1997. Galang lives in Norfolk, Virginia, and teaches creative writing at Iowa State University. Linmark, on the other hand, is the author of Rolling the R's, an experimental novel set in a small 1970's Hawaiian community. Born in Manila and was educated in Honolulu, Linmark's work has appeared in various journals and anthologies, including the Best Gay American Fiction of 1997 and Charlie Chan Is Dead.

The program began with readings by both Galang and Linmark from their books, followed by an open forum.
